Thatcher: just a one-off remark?

We need to observe caution, given that these are just reports. But...

Carol Thatcher made multiple references describing a French mixed-race tennis player as a "golliwog", "half-golliwog" and "golliwog Frog", sources say.

As Tim says, if this is true, that means there's no more 'wriggle room'. It wasn't a one-off remark; it was a series of remarks. And if it's true that a mixed-race person was called 'half-golliwog' then that destroys all the goodwill chucked in C Thatcher's direction.

I doubt that will be the version of events we are presented with if she does indeed do a deal for her side of the story with the Mail on Sunday. So let's wait and see. However, if the 'half-golliwog' statement is correct, she's rightly doomed, and those who have said with tearjerking certainty that they're convinced she meant no harm are sadly wrong.
